Are you pinning it to win it? Grow your Pinterest monthly views with these tips.
Have you been stuck in a zone for months, unsure of what to change for that breakthrough? Have you heard teachers and coaches saying that ‘Pinterest is a long game,’ ‘you will see the snowball effect in time,’ ‘be patient,’ and more? Because – same. I can relate.
I will be sharing 10 tips I did to increase my Pinterest monthly views, including Pinterest keyword research, Pinterest growth strategy, Pinterest pins, Pinterest analysis, and more.
This post is all about increasing Pinterest monthly views.
My Etsy Story
I started to run an Etsy Shop since 2023, which sells primarily digital products. One of my traffic generators is Pinterest. I found myself stuck at the 8K zone for nearly 3 months on Pinterest.
As someone who likes to see results fast, I started having these thoughts: ‘How long do I have to wait?’ ‘How long is long?’ ‘Am I doing anything wrong?’ ‘What do I have to change?’
If you have these thoughts, you’re in the right place because I’ll be sharing 10 learnings I gained from my Pinterest growth journey. I broke through the 8K+ zone and am currently at 13.5k monthly views.
The first secret? Never stop trying because you never know how close you are to a breakthrough. The second? Invest in yourself. These are 2 key ingredients to finding your own Pinterest strategy that is uniquely yours.
I went for a 5 Day Pinterest Growth Challenge from October 18, 2024, to October 22, 2024, with Meagen Williamson. She was absolutely amazing and full of wisdom. This is not sponsored, but I want to give her a shout out as a form of my gratitude. Thank you, Meagen! I was so inspired by her teachings, and as an action-taker, I implemented them straight away for my next batch of Pinterest Pins to try them out. And guess what? In 3 to 4 weeks, I started to see results. I have proven these:
- You do not need 3 months or more to see results.
- If you do not see results in 1 month, you are probably doing something wrong.
- If you do not see results in 1 month, change your strategy RIGHT now.
Before delving into the steps that grew my Pinterest account, remember: there’s no one-size-fits-all strategy. What works for me may not work for you. However, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it. What I love to do is to go for classes, implement strategies, see what works and what doesn’t, and adapt the strategies until I find what is uniquely mine. I hope you can do the same too.
Now, let’s dive into the 10 lessons learned after breaking through the 8K+ zone:
#1: Do not Skip your Pinterest Keyword Research
The first tip is to never skip your Pinterest keyword research. This step plays a crucial role in helping you rank on Pinterest and reach your audience by targeting specific keywords.
Here’s how I do mine:
- Step 1: Decide on the products to promote on Pinterest. Since my Pinterest account serves as a traffic generator for my Etsy shop, I focus on the products I offer. If you aim to promote other things like blog content, services, or programs, feel free to adapt the process.
- Step 2: Conduct keyword research using the Pinterest Search Bar.
- Step 3: Explore “Related Searches” for additional keyword insights.
- Step 4: Perform keyword research in Ads > Create a campaign under Targeting Details > Add Keywords. Note that for this step, you don’t need to run ads; you are simply gathering relevant keywords.
Ensure you compile and document all these keywords for use in anything related to SEO. Once again, do not skip this step.
#2: Conduct Monthly Pinterest Analysis
The second tip is to analyse your Pinterest data every 30 days, and due to my background in analysis, this is one of my favourites.
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you just want to check your stats every single day? Because that was me initially… and I discovered it was mentally draining. When I noticed that pins were not performing well, it would affect my mood, and all I could think about was how to improve them. However, the truth is, in reality, data from 1-2 days doesn’t tell you much. You have to give Pinterest time.
So, here’s my key takeaway: distract yourself. Work on other aspects that can contribute to your business growth, then return to analyse the data to see what works and what doesn’t. Change your habits slowly. If you can’t resist the urge, give it at least 1 to 2 weeks. Because that’s what I did 😉
#3: Pin More Video Content
The third lesson, which I believe is super important, is that we can’t run away from video content. It is present everywhere on every social media platform, and on Pinterest, the data consistently reinforces this. Simply by comparing regular pins with video pins, you will notice that the impressions for video pins are significantly higher. Just imagine the potential impact!
REGULAR PIN – 29 IMPRESSIONS
VIDEO PIN – 176 IMPRESSIONS
Now, I know what you are thinking: “I don’t know how to do video editing? It’s so time-consuming.” To me, these are just excuses. Here’s a question for you: “How much do you want it?” Making videos can be a straightforward and easy process.
Taking the example above, the video pin I shared isn’t actually a traditional “video” pin. I employed a simple move—animating my call to action—and voila, I observed nine times the impressions compared to a standard pin. You don’t have to create an entirely new video. Easily add transitions and animations to your existing pins, transforming them into engaging videos. Can you now see that the belief that “making videos is time-consuming” is just an excuse?
To make this process even more effortless for you, consider using the paid version of Canva. I use Canva almost every day for various aspects of my business, and it’s a lifesaver. Again, this is not sponsored; I genuinely love it. When you apply an animation or transition to a specific page or element, all you have to do is click “Apply to all” or use the “Paint format” tool, then extract the pages as separate files. These functions save so much time. If you are in it to win it, consider investing in something that can save you time. When it comes to batch work, the ROI for this is amazing.
#4: Embrace Pinterest as a Discovery Platform
The fourth lesson was a big AHA moment for me during the challenge when Meagen discussed treating Pinterest as a discovery platform designed for planners. My creative juices exploded when I learned to look at this from a different perspective. As business owners, we might be at step 10, but our target customers are still at step 1. The key is to meet them where they are. Here are questions I started asking myself:
- “Is my current content speaking to them?”
- “Am I using the right keywords they are using?”
- “What are they searching for?”
People using Pinterest are ready to be inspired, and our job is simple: inspire them. Through this, we gain their trust and attention. In the long run, which I consider the snowball effect, they will want to engage and connect with you, and this is when the ‘cha-chings’ start rolling in.
Let me give you an example of what I did. For one of my product categories – “Greeting Cards” – in the past, I described the product and its utility using keywords like “Card Templates,” “DIY Greeting Cards for holidays,” or “Holidays Greeting Cards.” However, I thought, if my target customers are searching on Pinterest to get inspired, would they search for these terms? My answer to myself was “maybe not.” So, I asked myself, “If they are looking to be inspired, what will they search for?” With that, I came up with new pins using keywords like “Creative Greeting Card Ideas” and “Cute Gift Card Ideas.” Using words like “ideas” and verbs like “creative” and “cute” brings me closer to where they are at.
Of course, I am still in the trial-and-error phase, but this mindset shift alone has helped me break through the 8K zone. For those of you who have been stuck for a long time, make this mindset shift, and believe me, in a matter of days, you can already see results from the number of impressions.
#5: Prioritise Organic Videos
The fifth lesson I learned was that I found organic videos (i.e., original footage captured from your phone without many edits) perform much better than non-organic ones.
Among the organic videos, I noticed patterns of success:
- Videos where I showed lots of hand movements.
- Videos that are between 5 to 10 seconds long.
- Videos that require minimal edits.
Remember, these are what work for me. Give them a try, and if they don’t work, adapt!
Once again, I want to emphasise that making videos is not a difficult, time-consuming process. After learning what worked, I take my already-printed products, find natural lighting, grab my phone, and simply record a video. After that, I upload the videos into Canva, add overlay text and a call-to-action, and extract all the pages as separate files ready to be pinned. There’s no need to make extensive edits to any of my videos, other than muting them. Can you start to see how easy the process can be?
#6 Infuse SEO into Every Aspect of Your Pinterest Strategy
The next tip is to think about SEO and incorporate it into every aspect of your Pinterest strategy. Remember tip number one where I shared about Pinterest Keyword Research. These two tips go hand in hand.
Here are the places where you can play with keywords in Pinterest:
- Profile Page
- Board Title
- Board Description
- Pin Title
- Pin Description
- Tags
- Hashtags
- Text Overlay
Using the keywords you have found, input them everywhere and make them count.
Here is what I have done so far:
- I place the short and impactful keywords as the text overlay on my pin and use the same ones as the pin title. This is because I want to let the algorithm know what the pin is about by reemphasizing the pin content. The key is not to confuse the algorithm by spamming all sorts of keywords you find.
- Next, I allocate them to the relevant Pinterest board. If you do not have one, create the board first before starting to pin.
- Then, I write the pin description. For this step, I usually copy-paste the first paragraph of my product description in Etsy and adapt it to that specific pin. This saves me lots of time compared to writing out a whole new description.
- Afterwards, I add in the tags. I like to do this first because some keywords that I want to use are not available in tags.
- Lastly, I add in the hashtags that cover two broad areas, relevant and are not yet present in my text overlay, title, description, and tags.
This way, I make sure that I cover all aspects of SEO when pinning new pins. In my latest batchwork for Pinterest, which covers 45 pins in total, I spent around 3 hours making and scheduling all the pins. Doing the math, that is around 4 mins per pin. To me, this is pretty worth it, especially because I am starting to see the results.
#7 Craft New Content for Continuous Pinterest Growth
The next tip is to craft new content if you want to ensure consistent Pinterest growth. Creating new content does not have to be intimidating; you just need to change the way you look at things.
Here’s what I considered a new content:
- Same Pin + Different Destination Link
- Same Pin + Different Text Overlay
- Different Video + Same Text Overlay
- Same Pin + Different Pin Title
- Different Pin + Same Pin Title
- Same Pin with Different Camera Angle
- And many more
There are numerous ways to create new content by changing your destination link, pin title, visuals, text overlay, and more. There are many ways to play the game, and all you have to do is try and error, see what works, and keep doing it. Growth does not have to be hard; it is always a matter of perspective.
#8 Boost your Pinterest Pins with Overlay Text
Another learning I had was that Pinterest video pins with overlay text perform better. Here are the pin formats I have used:
- Overlay text with a little transparency
- Overlay text with thick, dark fonts
#9 Expand your Pinterest Reach with Organic Pin Format
The next learning I had is that Pinterest pins that follow the standard Pin format work well.
- Place words on blank background
- Use text with easy-to-read fonts
#10 Strategically Repurpose your IG Reels
Last but not least, the final lesson is to strategically repurpose IG reels for Pinterest to avoid diluting efforts. For my Etsy Shop, I have two main traffic generators – Instagram and Pinterest. Currently, I am creating three reels per week on Instagram, featuring short vlogs, behind-the-scenes insights, product showcases, and more. The reels are usually in dynamic, voiceover, and storytelling formats.
On the days when I publish an IG reel, I repurpose them on Pinterest. Using the same video, I upload it to Pinterest and focus my time on writing the Pin titles, description, hashtags, and text. Many times, these videos perform well too. My interpretation as to why they perform well is twofold:
- I typically link these videos to the entire Etsy shop or my Instagram account, avoiding a salesy approach.
- These videos offer fresh content compared to the pins from my batch work, thanks to the dynamic nature of video content.
And there you have it—10 learnings that helped me break through the 8K+ zone. If I can do it, you can do it too. Remember, these are my learnings. Try them and adapt! Find a strategy that is uniquely yours. Every failure is a step closer to success. Never forget that success is a decision.
