As someone who has started her online business from the home, believe me when I say you don’t need to throw thousands of pounds upfront just to get started. With a little planning (and a few clever choices), you can launch your online business without emptying your wallet.

In this post, I will be sharing all about how much do you need to start an online business including what you actually need to budget for, where you can save smartly, and how to set yourself up for success from Day 1.

The Truth About Starting Costs

First things first — let’s bust a big myth: You don’t need tens of thousands to start an online business. In fact, many online businesses get off the ground with just a few hundred dollars (or even less).

Your startup cost mainly depends on the type of business you want to launch. For example:

  • If you are starting a freelance service (like writing, design, coaching), your costs could be super low — maybe just your website and a few tools for project management and client communication.
  • If you are launching an ecommerce store selling physical products, you will need a bigger budget for inventory, branding, and shipping.

The important thing to remember? It is completely possible to start small and scale up smartly.

Here’s what you will likely need to invest in when starting out:

  • Domain and Hosting:
    Your domain name (your website address) usually costs around $12 to $25 per year. Hosting your site can range from $6 to $20 a month.
  • Website Platform:

  • Basic Marketing Tools:
    Things like an email marketing platform to start building your audience early. Some offer free plans to start!

Focus first on tools that help you build credibility and accept payments. You can always upgrade later!

To help you picture it even better, here’s a breakdown of typical startup costs depending on the kind of online business you’re thinking about:

1. Freelance or Service-Based Business (Estimated: $120–$600)

If you are offering services like writing, graphic design, virtual assistance, coaching, or consulting, you are in luck — this is one of the most affordable ways to start.

Typical costs include:

  • Domain name: ~$15/year
  • Website hosting: ~$10/month
  • Business email: ~$6/month
  • Portfolio website: ~$50–$100 one-time
  • Design tools for branding (free with Canva, or ~$15/month if you upgrade)
  • Scheduling tools for client meetings (many free options like Calendly)

You can DIY most of these with free tools and templates to keep costs ultra-low.

2. Digital Products Business (Estimated: $250–$850)

Selling printables, eBooks, templates, or online courses? You will need a few extra things to set yourself up, but it is still very affordable compared to a traditional business!

  • Payment processors (no upfront fee, small per-transaction fee)

These platforms let you host your digital products, email list, and sales pages all in one place — often for around $10–$29/month — making it a simple, low-cost way to launch fast.

3. Ecommerce Store for Physical Products (Estimated: $600–$2,500+)

Launching an ecommerce store (like a Shopify boutique, handmade goods shop, or dropshipping store)? It usually requires a bigger upfront investment, mainly because of inventory, packaging, and shipping setup.

Typical costs include:

  • Shopify plan: ~$39/month for the basic plan
  • Initial inventory (depends on products and business model, usually ~$300–$1,500 minimum)
