Learn how to crochet a black cat for beginners.

Black cats have always fascinated me. In Japan, they are seen as a symbol of good luck, while in Halloween stories, they are often tied to witches, magic, and mystery. Whether you believe in the superstitions or just love their sleek look, I personally think black cats are super cute, and even more fun to crochet!
In this post, I will show you how to crochet a black cat that’s small, beginner-friendly, and perfect as a gift (especially for your cat-loving friends). I even added a mini Halloween hat if you want to go full spooky-season mode.
Let’s dive into this step-by-step black cat crochet pattern!

I will be using these crochet abbreviations for this crochet tutorial.

Step by Step Instructions
To make it easy to follow, I have split this crochet black cat pattern into 7 parts:
- Head
- Body
- Ears
- Eyes
- Tail
- Mouth
- Hat (Optional)
Head
Let’s start with the head. It is basically a soft little ball shape.

1: MR, 6 SC, SL ST
2: CH, 6 V, SL ST
3: CH, 6 (SC, V), SL ST
4: CH, 6 (SC, V, SC), SL ST
5: CH, 6 (3 SC, V), SL ST
6: CH, 6 (2 SC, V, 2 SC), SL ST
7 to 11: CH, 36 SC, SL ST
12: CH, 6 (4 SC, A), SL ST
13: CH, 6 (3 SC, A), SL ST
14: CH, 6 (2 SC, A), SL ST
15: CH, 6 (SC, A), SL ST
Add stuffing to give the head its shape.

And don’t cut the yarn. We will move straight into the body next.
Body
Now that we got the head, let’s continue with the body.

16: CH, 12 V, SL ST
17: CH, 24 SC, SL ST
18: CH, 6 (3 SC, V), SL ST
19 to 21: CH, 30 SC, SL ST
22: CH, 6 (3 SC, A), SL ST
23: CH, 24 SC, SL ST
24: CH, 6 (2 SC, A), SL ST
Add more stuffing to give your cat a rounder body.
25: CH, 6 (SC, A), SL ST
25: CH, 6 A, SL ST
Leave a long yarn tail for sewing and close it off.
Ears
Then, let’s do with the ears! You will need to crochet two of these.

1: MR, 3 SC
2: CH, 3 V, SL ST
3: CH, 3 (SC, V), SL ST
4 to 5: CH, 9 SC, SL ST
After crocheting both ears, use your yarn needle to sew the ears onto the head. You can place them close together for a sweet look, or space them out if you want a sassier vibe. Totally up to you!

Eyes
Time to give your cat some personality!
Use a glue gun to attach the safety eyes between rows 9 and 10 of the head. Leave around 6 stitches between the eyes for a balanced look.

Tail
Let’s crochet the tail. It is essentially a simple cylinder!

1: MR, 5 SC, SL ST
2 to 16: CH, 5 SC, SL ST
Once you are done, sew one end of the tail to the cat.

Then glue the rest of it to the body so it looks like the tail curls around naturally.

Mouth
Now for the finishing touch! Use a white thread to sew a little mouth. You can go simple with a straight line or play around depending on your style.

Hat
This part is totally optional, but if you are going for a Halloween vibe, this tiny hat is a fun add-on!

1: MR, 5 SC, SL ST
2 to 3: CH, 5 SC, SL ST
4: CH, V, 4 SC, SL ST
5: CH, 6 SC, SL ST
6: CH, 3 (SC, V), SL ST
7: CH, 9 SC, SL ST
8: CH, 3 (SC, V, SC), SL ST
9: CH, 12 SC, SL ST
10: CH, 3 (3 SC, V), SL ST
11: CH, 15 SC, SL ST
12: CH, 3 (4SC, V), SL ST
Change color
13: CH, 18 SC, SL ST
14: CH, 18 SC, SL ST
Change color
15: CH, 18 V, SL ST
16: CH, 36 SC
It fits perfectly on top of one ear, so cute!

And just like that, you got your very own black cat amigurumi!
