How to do keyword research for Etsy without paying a penny?

how to do keyword research for Etsy

Whether you are just opening your Etsy shop or you are an Etsy seller looking to rank higher, keyword research is your best friend. It helps customers find your products, so you will want to make the most of it!

You have probably heard of tools such as Erank or Everbee to help with Etsy SEO. But as someone running two Etsy shops, I have never use these tools—and I still manage to rank high!

In this post, I will be spilling the secrets of how you can do keyword research for Etsy.

Where to Use Keywords on Etsy

Before we jump into the research tips, let’s talk about where you can add these keywords to your Etsy shop. Here’s a quick checklist:

Shopfront:

  • Shop Title
  • Shop Announcement
  • Shop Sections
  • About Section

Product Listing:

  • Product Title
  • Alt Text (for images)
  • Product Description
  • Tags

Now that you know where to use your keywords, let’s explore how to find the best ones!

Ways to Do Keyword Research

I have two go-to methods for keyword research: one within Etsy itself and another on Pinterest. Both are free and super simple to follow.

Keyword Research on Etsy

Start by heading to Etsy’s search bar and typing in a keyword related to your product. Pay attention to the dropdown suggestions—these show short-tail and long-tail keywords people are actively searching for.

Next, hit enter and explore the listings that pop up. Keep an eye out for listings with badges like “Etsy Picks” or “Bestseller”—open up these listings in a separate tab!

Then, scroll down to find these two sections:

  • “Explore Related Searches”
  • “Explore More Related Searches”

Write down the keywords you find here, and repeat this process with a few different search terms. You will quickly build up a strong keyword list.

If you want more ideas, let’s hop over to Pinterest!

Keyword Research on Pinterest

Pinterest works similarly to Etsy when it comes to keyword research. Start by typing your keyword into the search bar and check out the dropdown suggestions—these are real search terms that people are using.

Once you hit enter, look for the colourful bubbles below the search bar. These bubbles contain words and phrases you can add to your original keyword to create long-tail keywords.

Now, scroll down and keep an eye out for sections labelled “Related Searches.”

There are usually multiple of these sections with different keyword suggestions, so make sure you explore the page fully.
