Want to crochet your very own patchwork cardigan? Learn how in 3 simple steps.
Crochet patchwork projects are probably one of my favourite crochet projects to tackle. Crocheting a patchwork cardigan was one of my largest crochet projects when I first ventured into the world of crocheting. It took me almost 2 months to finish the project. It turned out to be my favourite, maybe because it is in my favourite colours.

This post is all about how to crochet patchwork cardigan.
Crochet Materials Needed
To get you started, these are the list of materials you need to prepare beforehand.
Materials needed:
- Darning needle
- 4.5mm Crochet Hook
- Measuring Tape
- Yarn – 850g
- Pink colour – 250g
- White colour – 250g
- Blue colour – 250g + 100g (for the ribbings)
For my cardigan, I chose my favourite colours – blue and pink. My blue and white yarns have a touch of sprinkles, making it feel extra special.
For my yarns, I chose milk cotton yarns.
Feel free to select the colours and yarns that you like to make your project uniquely yours. You may even choose more than 3 colours and make it a rainbow cardigan. Add your personality into it!
The Crochet Patchwork Cardigan Pattern
The cardigan consists of 6 segments:
- Front x2
- Back
- Sleeve x2
- Front Ribbing
- Bottom Ribbing
- Cuff Ribbing
1 to 3 are essentially the squares we will make. Whereas, for 4 to 6, think of them like the outer circumference of the cardigan.
Before starting the project, it is important to plan out the patchwork pattern you wish so you can visualize how it will be.
Here is an illustration of how the crochet patchwork cardigan layout will look like.
You can rearrange the colours as per your liking. If you are using more than 3 colours, remember to plan this out to avoid having similar colours adjacent to each other.
This step is also essential for us to be clear on how many squares you need to make for each colour. Trust me, when it comes to sewing all the squares together, it will become quite confusing and repetitive and this layout will be very helpful.
Crocheting the Patchwork Cardigan
The patchwork cardigan is the most beginner-friendly crochet project, especially for those looking to practise crocheting techniques. This is because it uses fundamental crochet stitches like chain stitch and half double crochet.
To start, these are the abbreviations that I will be using for this section.
If you are a complete beginner to crocheting and have absolutely no idea what these are, do a simple Google on these terms and learn how to do these basic patterns. Keywords like “Crochet Stitches” or “Crochet Techniques” should do the trick. There are lots of videos and tutorials that are super simple and easy to follow.
We will only be using these 3 crochet stitches for the patchwork cardigan.

Step 1: Crochet All Squares & Ribbings
The Squares – Essentially made up of 18 rows and approx 15cm x 15cm
1: 22 CH
2: 22 HDC, turn
3: 2 CH, 21 HDC, turn
4 to 19: Repeat (3) x16
Cut and hide any excess yarn.
The Front Ribbings – Approx 101cm
1: 6 CH
2: 6 HDC TBL, turn
3: 2 CH, 5 HDC TBL
Repeat (3) until you reach your desired length.
The Bottom Ribbings – Approx 115cm
1: 11 CH
2: 11 HDC TBL, turn
3: 2 CH, 10 HDC TBL
Repeat (3) until you reach your desired length.
The Cuff Ribbings – Approx 21cm
1: 11 CH
2: 11 HDC TBL, turn
3: 2 CH, 10 HDC TBL
Repeat (3) until you reach your desired length.
For the ribbings, use the measuring tape to determine your desired length. The measurements above are my actual sizes. Your measurements may differ from mine, do not panic, it is perfectly fine.
Make it comfortable for yourself. If you are making it for someone, it will be important to know their body measurements so your efforts don’t go to waste and they can wear it.
For my cuffs, I like it slightly larger than my wrist size as I find it more comfy when it is oversized. Do adjust the length while you crochet so it will be more comfortable for you and to your liking.
Another thing to think about will be the material of your yarn. If it shrinks after multiple washes, it will be wise to make your cardigan slightly bigger.
Step 2: Sewing the Squares Together
Now for the fun part, lay out the squares to ensure that no similar colours are side by side. Refer to the illustration above for reference. If you have your own patchwork pattern, remember to do a double check. Once confirmed, use the darning needle to sew all the squares together.
This was how my patchwork cardigan looks like after I sew the 51 squares together. Doesn’t it look great already?
Step 3: Sew the Ribbings
The final step is to sew the ribbings onto the cardigan.
You may also sew on buttons or pockets to your cardigan. I did not add any for mine as I wanted my cardigan to be outerwear with a slightly cropped design.
It will be more practical given the weather in Singapore.
