Make Your Own Crochet Bandana Hair Scarf.

Bandana Anatomy
Before we dive into crocheting, let’s quickly look at how the crochet head scarf comes together.
Depending on your head size and how big you want the bandana to be, you have two size options:
- Smaller size – 3 granny squares and 3 triangles
- Bigger size – 6 granny squares and 4 triangles
The small bandana wraps around approximately 36 cm, while the larger one wraps around 48 cm. I recommend using a measuring tape to see which one fits your preference before starting.

Start by crocheting your granny squares. You’ll change yarn colour for every row in this sequence: light yellow → yellow → blue → royal blue → denim blue.

2: 5 CH, (3 DC, CH, 3 DC, 2 CH) x3, 3 DC, CH, 2 DC, SL ST
3: 5 CH, (3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, 2 CH) x3, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 2 DC, SL ST
4: 5 CH, (3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, 2 CH) x3, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 2 DC, SL ST
5: 5 CH, (3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, 2 CH) x3, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 2 DC, SL ST
Repeat this pattern until you have 6 granny squares.
02 Triangles
Next, let’s make the triangles. Follow the same colour change sequence as before.
1: MR, 5 CH, 3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC, CH, DC
2: 5 CH, (3 DC, CH, 3 DC), 2 CH, (3 DC, CH, 3 DC), CH, DC
3: 5 CH, (3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC), 2 CH, (3 DC, CH, DC, CH, 3 DC), CH, DC
4: 5 CH, (3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC), 2 CH, (3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, DC, CH, 3 DC), CH, DC
5: 5 CH, (3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC), 2 CH, (3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, 3 DC, CH, DC, CH, 3 DC), CH, DC
Repeat until you have completed 4 triangles.
03 Putting the Granny Squares & Triangles Together
Once all your pieces are ready, it is time to assemble your hair bandana crochet pattern!
Lay the granny squares and triangles out according to your chosen size and placement.
Then, simply use a slip stitch to join everything together. It should look like this:
04 The Sides
Let’s work on the edges of your crochet head scarf.
On the triangle sides, crochet 4 single crochet stitches into each hole.
On the granny square sides, follow this pattern:
1 SC in the first hole → 5 DC in the next → 1 SC in the next → repeat around the circumference.
This will give your bandana a shell-like finish.
05 The Strings
The final step is to make the strings that wrap around your head.
I made mine about 50 cm long on each side, but you can adjust the length however you like.
Here’s how:
- Start with chains until you reach your desired length
- Go back 2 chains
- Do half double crochet (HDC) all the way back
- Slip stitch into the bandana to attach
Repeat this on the other side，and you are done! You just crocheted a beautiful starry night-inspired bandana hair scarf.
