How to Set Up a Pinterest Account for Your Business

Feeling lost on how to set up your Pinterest account for your business — or worried you have missed something important?

How to Set Up a Pinterest Account for Your Business

You are not alone. Setting up a Pinterest account can seem like one more overwhelming thing on your to-do list… but when done right, it is one of the easiest platforms to grow with.

I personally use Pinterest to drive thousands of clicks to my blog, grow my email list, sell digital products, and send traffic to my Etsy shop — all without running ads.

In this post, I will walk you through exactly how to make a Pinterest account for your business — step-by-step. Whether you are starting from scratch or want to double-check your setup, chances are there is at least one thing you are missing.

Let’s fix that.

Why Use Pinterest for Your Business?

If you are a business owner — especially one selling digital products, blogging, coaching, or running an Etsy shop — Pinterest isn’t just a “nice to have.”

It is a game-changer. Here’s why:

  • Pinterest is a visual search engine, not a social platform. Your content has a much longer shelf life.
  • It can drive organic traffic to your blog or store on autopilot
  • You can grow your email list, leads, and sales even while you sleep (literally).
  • Users come to Pinterest with intent. They are looking for inspiration, ideas, and solutions — like yours.
  • You get access to Pinterest Analytics to track performance and know what is working.

Think of Pinterest like Google — but for visual learners. You don’t need to dance, post stories every day, or show your face if you don’t want to.

What Makes Pinterest Different from Instagram or TikTok?

Here’s the big difference: Pinterest is not about the moment — it is about the search.

On Instagram and TikTok, your content disappears in a day or two. But on Pinterest? A well-designed pin with the right keywords can keep sending you traffic for months or even years.

So if you are tired of the content hamster wheel, Pinterest might just be your new favourite platform.

How to Start a Pinterest Account in 5 Easy Steps

Here’s exactly how to set up your Pinterest account and get it ready for business.

Step 1: Create a Pinterest Account

You can either sign up from scratch at pinterest.com/business or convert an existing account.

Tip: If you already have a personal Pinterest account but want to keep things separate, create a new account using a different email or Google login.

Step 2:  Choose a Business Account

Pinterest offers two account types: Personal and Business. You will want a Business Account so you can:

  • Access Pinterest Analytics
  • Run ads (optional)
  • Optimise for growth with claimed websites and rich pins

If you accidentally signed up with a personal account, don’t panic! You can switch to a business account under Settings > Account Management.

Step 3: Set Up Your Profile Page

Let’s make sure your profile makes a strong first impression:

  • Name format: [Your Name] | [Keywords your audience is searching]
  • Bio: Write a short, keyword-rich description of what your account is about
  • Profile photo: Use a clear photo of yourself or your logo
  • Pinterest banner: Make one quickly in Canva! A simple collage with your products, branding, or freebies works great

Step 4: Claim Your Assets

Make a pinterest account

Go to Settings > Claimed Accounts and do the following:

  • Claim your website
  • Claim your Instagram account
  • Turn off auto-publish from Instagram (this keeps your content strategy intentional)

If you don’t have a website yet, you can still claim it later and continue building your account in the meantime.

Step 5: Create Pinterest Boards

Before you pin anything, you need Pinterest Boards to organise your content. Start with your core topics or brand pillars.

  • Create at least 5 boards to begin with
  • Use generic but relevant topics to keep things broad (e.g. “Crochet Project Ideas” instead of “Crochet Bag Charms”)
  • Optimise your board titles and descriptions with keywords

Here’s what a well-optimised Pinterest board includes:

  • A clear board name (with keywords)
  • A keyword-rich description

And that’s it — your Pinterest account is now set up and ready to grow. Once your boards are ready, you can start pinning content that links back to your offers, blog posts, and lead magnets.

Pinterest SEO 101

Pinterest works like a search engine. This means your success depends on how well your pins match search intent.

Here’s what to keep in mind when you start pinning:

  • Use keywords in your pin titles, and pin descriptions.
  • Don’t keyword-stuff. Use full sentences and natural phrasing
  • Pin consistently — Pinterest loves active accounts
