Learn how to make affiliate income for beginners.

how to make affiliate income

Want to earn income without creating products, dealing with inventory, or talking to customers? Affiliate marketing is the simplest online income stream to start, especially for beginners with no money.

Ever since I started blogging, I have been making money with affiliate marketing from the products I promote, the online tools I use, and the business resources I invest in. Everything I recommend is something I personally use or genuinely love, which makes sharing them feel natural.

In this post, I am breaking down everything I’ve learned about making affiliate income, and how you can start earning online as an affiliate marketer.

What is Affiliate Marketing

Let’s start with the basics: what exactly is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate means “a person or organization officially connected to a larger body,” while marketing refers to promoting and selling a product or service.

Put together, affiliate marketing simply means getting paid to promote products or services. You share a unique link, someone buys through it, and you earn a commission. It really is that straightforward.

Why Affiliate Marketing Works

Now that you know what affiliate marketing is, let’s talk about why it works, for both businesses and affiliates.

Why businesses love it

Businesses run affiliate programs because it gives them more people promoting their offers. This helps them:

  • Save time
  • Increase sales
  • Build credibility

When others willingly promote a product or service, it signals trust and quality. More promoters = more reach.

Why affiliates love it

On the flip side, affiliate marketers benefit in several ways:

1. Low to no start-up cost
You don’t need inventory, equipment, or a business loan. Perfect for beginners starting from scratch.

2. No need to create your own product
You simply recommend products you already use or enjoy.

3. Low barrier to entry
There are countless affiliate programs in every niche.

4. Easy to scale
Once you build traffic, your income grows without extra fulfillment work.

5. Earn while you sleep
If you learn how to build simple systems and funnels, your content promotes for you automatically.

3 Steps to Start Earning Affiliate Income

Now let’s walk through the actual steps. It is straightforward, really!

Step 1: Find Your Niche

The first step is choosing a niche. There are tons of affiliate programs out there, so you want to pick products and services you’ll genuinely recommend.

People can tell whether you actually care about what you promote. Passion builds trust, and trust drives conversions.

Next, avoid being too generic. Niche down just enough so your audience immediately knows what you’re about.

For example:

  • Don’t just say “travel” → go for “budget travel” or “solo travel”
  • Don’t just say “fashion” → go for “petite fashion” or “vintage fashion”
  • Don’t just say “beauty” → go for “K-beauty” or “beauty for eczema-prone skin”

If you are starting from scratch, specificity helps you stand out.

A simple way to niche down:

  • Look at the products you naturally use
  • Notice what problems you are solving
  • Identify what you’re already drawn to

This instantly gives you a focused niche to build around.

Step 2: Join Affiliate Programs

Once you know your niche, start researching affiliate programs you can join.

There are mainly two types:

1. Global and local marketplaces

Examples: Amazon, TikTok Shop, Etsy.

They offer:

  • A wide range of products
  • Low commission rates (usually under 10%)

To earn a full-time income from these, you need massive traffic, which is tough when you are starting with no audience.

2. High-ticket affiliate programs

These offer:

  • Higher-priced products (3–4 figures)
  • At least 30% commission

This is the smart way to start, because high-ticket commissions don’t require a huge audience. A few high-quality conversions can equal hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Here are a few ways to find affiliate programs in your niche:

  • Search “your niche + affiliate program” on Google
  • Browse the OfferLab marketplace
  • Check the tools, courses, or apps you already use and see if they offer an affiliate program

Your goal is simple: get your unique affiliate link.

Step 3: Promote your link

Finally, it is time to promote your affiliate link.

The key is to avoid posting everywhere without intention. Choose one platform first, master it, then expand.

To start, ask yourself: Where does my audience hang out?
Focus your efforts there.

Here are a few platforms you can consider:

  • Instagram
  • Pinterest
  • TikTok
  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn

Create valuable content, build trust, and integrate your recommendations naturally.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Now that you are excited to start your affiliate journey, let’s talk about a few common beginner mistakes. Avoiding these will save you so much time and frustration.

1. Promoting too many random products

If you don’t have a clear niche, your recommendations will look messy and inconsistent. When your content feels all over the place, your audience won’t know what you are known for, which leads to lower trust and fewer clicks.

Niching down helps your content look cohesive and makes it easier for people to remember you for something specific.

2. Not building an audience

A lot of beginners think affiliate income is only about dropping links everywhere. But the truth is this: if you want to earn significant affiliate income, you must be able to play with both the price and the quantity.

  • Price = your commission rate
  • Quantity = your traffic and clicks

If you promote low-ticket items, you need high traffic.
If you promote high-ticket programs, you don’t need as much traffic, but you still need an audience.

Either way, building an audience is non-negotiable. Even a small, engaged community can convert incredibly well.

3. Only posting links without value

Dropping a link isn’t enough. Your audience needs context, storytelling, and real-life examples so they can understand why a product matters to them.

Create content that:

  • Teaches something
  • Solves a problem
  • Shares your experience
  • Integrates the product naturally

This approach builds trust and makes your recommendations feel relatable instead of salesy. When your content feels genuine, people are more likely to click and buy.

4. Having a messy menu or link hub

Your audience won’t buy from you if they can’t find your links. A clean and organized “link hub” (like a Beacons page, Stan Store, or Linktree) makes it easy for people to browse everything you recommend.

Remember: No clicks = no sales.

Your menu should be:

  • Easy to navigate
  • Organized by category
  • Clearly labeled
  • Mobile-friendly

Your goal is to reduce friction so people can tap, explore, and buy, without confusion.

How Long Does It Take to Make Money

This is the question everyone asks, and the answer depends on several factors:

  • How much time you can commit
  • Whether you already have an audience
  • How strong your content skills are
  • Your experience with marketing or sales

Naturally, if you have more time, some marketing experience, and consistent content, you will hit your goals faster. But even if you are starting from zero, affiliate marketing is still one of the easiest income streams to begin.
