Step-by-Step Instructions

I am dividing this crochet sardine pattern into 4 sections so it is easy to follow:

  1. Body of the fish
  2. Tail of the body
  3. Eyes
  4. Putting It Together

1: Body of the fish

Let’s start with the body of the fish.

Start with white yarn.

2: CH, V, 17 SC, 3V, 17 SC, 2V, SL ST

3: CH, SC, V, 17 SC, 3 (SC, V), 17 SC, 2 (SC, V), SL ST

Change color.

4: CH, 52 SC, SL ST

5: CH, SC, A, 17 SC, 3 (SC, A), 17 SC, 2 (SC, A)

Leave a long tail for sewing. Put stuffing if needed

2: Tail of the body

Next, let’s work on the tail. Start from the bottom (white section) and work your way up. Choose one end. I usually go with the side that has the slip stitches.

Then, hide the yarn inside the fish.

If you are more advanced in crocheting, you can skip cutting the yarn in Step 1 and simply continue crocheting the tail directly.

3: Eyes

Now, let’s move on to the eyes. Start with the white part.

Make 2 of these so you have one for each side.

From here, you have two options: sew an X onto each eye using black yarn, or glue safety eyes on instead. Both give a slightly different look, so go with whichever one you prefer!

4: Putting It Together

Finally, let’s bring everything together. Start by gluing the eyes onto each side of the sardine fish.

Then, sew the patterns onto the sardine’s body. Here are 2 ways you can try:

And if you would rather keep it simple, you can totally skip this step and leave the body as it is. It still looks adorable either way.

That’s it! Your crochet sardine keychain is done. This fish amigurumi is one of those quick crochet projects that is great for beginners and experienced crafters alike. I hope you had fun making it.
