Jellycat Inspired Crochet Sun Plush (Free Pattern)

Learn to crochet a sun plush.

crochet sun plush

With summer coming up, this adorable crochet sun plush is the perfect project to pick up. It is soft, squishy, and just as charming as the Jellycat version, but made entirely by you.

Now, a quick note: the original Jellycat sun only has 7 rays, but I like things symmetrical, so I went with 8 instead. You can easily adjust to 7 if you want to stay true to the Jellycat look. Either way, this pattern is beginner-friendly and makes a great handmade gift.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

To make this crochet sun pattern, I have divided it into 4 sections:

    1. Middle of the Sun
    2. Sun Rays
    3. Legs
    4. Putting It Together

    1: Middle of the Sun

To start, let us work on the heart of the sun.

    3: CH, 8 (SC, V), SL ST

4: CH, 8 (SC, V, SC), SL ST

    5: CH, 8 (3 SC, V), SL ST

    6: CH, 8 (2 SC, V, 2 SC), SL ST

7: CH, BLO 48 SC, SL ST

    8: CH, 8 (2 SC, A, 2 SC), SL ST

    9: CH, 8 (3 SC, A), SL ST

    Add stuffing.

    10: CH, 8 (2 SC, A), SL ST

    11: CH, 8 (SC, A), SL ST

    12: CH, 8 A, SL ST

    Cut and hide yarn.

    2: Sun Rays

Next, make 8 sun rays. You can do 7 if you are following the Jellycat version more closely.

3: CH, SC, 2 (SC, V), SC, SL ST

4: CH, 8 SC, SL ST

5: CH, 8 SC, SL ST

Leave a long tail for sewing.

    3: Legs

    Now, make 2 legs.

1: MR, 6 SC, SL ST

    2: CH, 6 V, SL ST

3 to 4: CH, 12 SC, SL ST

    5: CH, 6 A, SL ST

6 to 8: CH, 6 SC, SL ST

    4: Putting it together

Finally, it is time to assemble your crochet sun plush.

    Step 1: Attach the legs

Sew the legs onto the bottom of the sun. You can add a bit of glue as well if you want them extra secure.

Step 2: Glue the sun rays

You can sew all the rays on if you prefer, but I find gluing them on much faster and more efficient.

A little trick I use is to lay all the rays out first to check the spacing before committing with the glue gun.

Step 3: Glue the eyes and sew the mouth

Lastly, pick a safety eye size of your choice and glue it on. After that, sew the mouth and your sun is complete.
