Learn to make pipe cleaner sunflower.

Looking for a fun and quick craft to do over the weekend that is super Pinterest worthy? This pipe cleaner sunflower tutorial is exactly what you need. I made this sunflower stalk for my best friend’s birthday, and it turned out extra good, so good that we ended up having the funnest photoshoot with it just the two of us.
As someone who loves DIY crafts, this is one of the fastest ways to make a flower this size. And because I wanted to make it a set, I also made a matching sunflower bag charm that is easier to carry around.
In this post, I will be sharing the step by step instructions and tutorials for the pipe cleaner sunflower bouquet and the matching keychain, so you can make your own pipe cleaner flowers easily at home.
Materials needed
- Yellow pipe cleaners x200
- Green pipe cleaners x200
- Brown pipe cleaners x100
- 20 Green Flower Stems
- 4 Glue sticks
- Glue gun
Step-by-Step Instructions
1: Sunflower Stalk
To start, prepare the pieces for your sunflower stalk. Here is everything you will need for one full sunflower:
- 9 small flower petals
- 19 big flower petals
- 8 big sepal or green petals
- 9 small sepal or green petals
- 2 leaves
- 8 middle of flower pieces
- 1 stalk
Once you have all the pieces ready, it is time to put everything together.

To assemble the full sunflower, heat up your glue gun first to make the process easier. Watch the video tutorial above to visualize these steps better, then follow along below.
- Put together the middle of the flower by rolling the pieces up like sushi and gluing along the way until you finish all 8 of them. You should end up with a beautiful brown circle. Pick a side that you like and place that side facing down on the table.
- Start gluing the small flower petals on, spacing them evenly apart.
- Next, glue the big flower petals in between the small flower petals for the first layer, then stagger the next layer on top. You will now have 3 layers of flower petals.
- Glue the big green petals on, spacing them evenly apart. Make sure to leave some space in the middle.
- Continue gluing the small green petals on in the same way.
- Then, glue the stalk on.
- Next, take a green pipe cleaner and start twisting it around the stalk, starting from the flower area to cover up all the messiness, and work your way down.
- As you reach the middle of the stalk, start attaching the leaves by twisting at the stem part of each leaf onto the stalk.
- Continue twisting down until you reach the end of the stalk, then add some glue to secure it.
Finally, twist the sunflower and adjust the petals until you reach your desired shape and liking.
2: Sunflower Keychain
Now that your sunflower stalk is complete, let’s move on to the matching keychain. For the sunflower keychain, you will need to prepare:
- 16 flower petals
- 2 leaves
- 2 middle of the flower pieces
Once your pieces are ready, follow the instructions below to put them together.

For assembling the keychain, heat up your glue gun again for more efficient putting together. Watch the video tutorial above to visualize it better.
- Flip the correct side of the middle of the flower to face the table, then start gluing 8 flower petals spaced evenly apart.
- Repeat step 1 until you have 2 sunflowers.
- Then, flip one of the flowers around and glue the leaf on, placing it 2 petals apart.
- Glue the other sunflower on the opposite side, making sure to stagger the flower petals.
Finally, attach your desired keychain hardware, and you will have your very own double sided sunflower bag charm.
